Cultivating an Awareness of God's Presence

'Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.' Genesis 28:16 NIV

Jacob lived life on the fast lane doing deals and generating lots of money, unlike David who was on the slow lane, tending a flock of sheep in his pasture. But notice what each of them said about God. 'When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it"' (Genesis 28:16 NIV).

On the other hand, David said: 'I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore, my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure' (Psalm 16:7-9 NIV).

What a difference seen between Jacob and David. Jacob was so busy that he failed to recognise God's voice nor had he cultivated an awareness of God’s presence. On the other hand, David said, 'I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken' (Psalm 16:8 NIV). Those words are perhaps the simplest and best definition of what a spiritual life is about.

The Bible says, “Who has known the mind of Christ so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16 NIV). Having the mind of Christ means that the indwelling Christ in me can think His thoughts through me. Isn't that wonderful? When you have a feeling of reassurance, or a sense of guidance, or you feel the conviction of sin, it means God is present with you and in you. Therefore, we must pay attention and honour His presence by responding to Him. Walking with God is to be sensitive to His leading, to take heed of His voice and to obey Him. This is what it takes to 'walk with God'.

God is always speaking to us but we need to take time to listen and develop a heart to respond to Him.  Make a journal of what God is saying to you each day and be sensitive to His voice.  As you respond to God each time He speaks, you will grow in your spiritual life to love and honour Him.

God bless you.
